Two Bivalent Boosters Approved
The CDC’s independent advisory committee, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) voted late last week to recommend the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech bivalent boosters. This follows FDA’s emergency use authorization (EUA) of these two bivalent boosters on Aug. 31, 2022.
The bivalent vaccines contain two messenger RNA (mRNA) components of the COVID-19 virus, one of the original strain and the other one in common between the BA.4 and BA.5 lineages of the omicron variant.
Individuals ages 12 years and older are recommended to receive an age-appropriate bivalent mRNA booster dose at least two months after receipt of a primary series or prior booster dose.
For children five through 11 years, the previous recommendation remains unchanged and a monovalent booster continues to be recommended.
Local Distribution of Bivalent Boosters
Although the national supply of the Bivalent vaccines is robust, the initial roll out and delivery of the vaccines will be limited. Most local health care providers will begin offering these boosters this week and prefer or require appointments until supplies increase. For additional information, please contact your health care provider or pharmacy of choice for these initial distributions. Contact them directly for additional details. There are NO priority groups for these boosters.
