Another COVID Wave Expected

On July 15, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra renewed the public health emergency for three more months.  COVID cases continue to rise as the Omicron subvariant BA5 takes over previous variants BA.2 and BA2.12.1.

In Dubuque County, all July-sequenced variants were the BA5 subvariants whereas June-sequenced variants were all BA2 and BA2.12.1 except for one BA4.  With all the subvariants present in Dubuque County, the Dubuque County Public Health Incident Management Team expects another wave of new cases

These subvariants are immune evasive, meaning they can still infect those who are vaccinated, boosted, or have had COVID-19 in the past.  However, vaccines and boosters are effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalization, and death.

The CDC recommends COVID-19 vaccines for everyone 6 months and older and boosters for everyone 5 years and older, if eligible. Adults ages 50 years and older and people ages 12 years and older who are moderately or severely immunocompromised should get 2 boosters.
