CDC Modifies Mask Guidance for Fully Vaccinated Individuals, Local Ordinances to be Discussed

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control announced new guidance for fully vaccinated individuals yesterday afternoon.

"If you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, you can resume activities that you did before the pandemic without wearing a mask or staying 6 feet apart, except where required by federal, state, local, tribal, or territorial laws, including local business and workplace guidance."

 Remember, you’re considered fully vaccinated against COVID-19:

• 2 weeks after the second shot of Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine
• 2 weeks after 1 dose of Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 Vaccine

 The Dubuque County and City of Dubuque face covering ordinances are still in effect until they are rescinded by those elected officials.  Changes to ordinances must be made in a public meeting and Iowa public meeting laws require 24-hour public notices and agenda publication.  The Dubuque County Board of Supervisors will meet at 4:30 today to discuss the county ordinance and the Dubuque City Council will discuss the city ordinance at their 6:30 p.m. meeting on Monday.

IDPH Urges Vaccination of 12-15 Year Old Adolescents

Following U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) EUA approval on May 10, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) adopted CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices’ (ACIP) recommendation that endorsed the safety and effectiveness of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine and its use in 12- through 15-year-old adolescents.

The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) recognizes this as a critical step forward for the vaccine campaign in Iowa and urges Iowa families to vaccinate their children in this age group. The CDC has also revised administration guidance, stating that COVID-19 and other vaccines may now be administered without regard to timing. This includes simultaneous administration of COVID-19 and other vaccines on the same day, as well as co-administration within 14 days.

“We want to emphasize the importance of this vaccine as a tool to keep Iowa kids healthy and encourage families to have a conversation with their children and healthcare provider. Making a plan to get the COVID vaccine as soon as possible helps to ensure that Iowa kids in this age group can safely enjoy their normal summer activities and there’s no interference with other immunizations they may be scheduled to receive,” said Dr. Caitlin Pedati, IDPH Medical Director & State Epidemiologist.
