8 Things to Know about COVID-19 Vaccines

Now that there are authorized and recommended vaccines to prevent COVID-19 in the United States, here are 8 things you need to know about the new COVID-19 Vaccination Program and COVID-19 vaccines.

  1. The safety of COVID-19 vaccines is a top priority.
  2. COVID-19 vaccination will help protect you from getting COVID-19. Two doses are needed.
  3. CDC is making recommendations for who should be offered COVID-19 vaccine first when supplies are limited.
  4. There is currently a limited supply of COVID-19 vaccine in the United States, but supply will increase in the weeks and months to come.
  5. After COVID-19 vaccination, you may have some side effects. This is a normal sign that your body is building protection.
  6. Cost is not an obstacle to getting vaccinated against COVID-19.
  7. The first COVID-19 vaccines are being used under Emergency Use Authorizations (EUA) from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Many other vaccines are still being developed and tested.
  8. COVID-19 vaccines are one of many important tools to help us stop this pandemic.

Dubuque County:

  • No new deaths.
  • Total deaths related to COVID to date = 142 
  • Underlying Cause Deaths = 134, Contributing Factor Deaths = 8

Iowa:

  • 1 new death.
  • Total deaths related to COVID to date = 4,139
  • Underlying Cause Deaths = 3,792, Contributing Factor Deaths = 347

HOSPITALIZATIONS

  • Dubuque County Residents Hospitalized =  12 as of Jan. 9. (10 less than Jan. 7)
  • Iowans Currently Hospitalized = 555 (14 more than yesterday.)

  • Past 14-day average = 12.2%
  • Past 7-day average = 9.7%

  • New recoveries = 19 
  • Total number of recoveries = 9,932

Iowa:

  • New recoveries = 551 
  • Total number of recoveries = 256,154

LONG-TERM CARE FACILITY OUTBREAKS

Dubuque County:
 3 long-term care facility outbreaks (same as yesterday) with 64 current positive cases (same as yesterday), 8 new positive cases in the last 14 days, and 7 recoveries:

  • Ennoble Nursing & Rehabilitation, Dubuque (20 current positive cases, 2 in the last 14 days, and 0 recoveries)
  • Hawkeye Care Center, Asbury (41 current positive cases, 3 in the last 14 days, and 7 recoveries)
  • Sunnycrest Manor, Dubuque (3 current positive cases, 3 in the last 14 day, and 0 recoveries)

Iowa:
 86 long-term care facility outbreaks (4 less than yesterday) with 1,998 current positive cases (residents and staff), 959 recoveries (residents and staff), and 1,680 resident deaths from all Iowa LTC facilities to date.
