CDC & IDPH Offer Shortened Quarantine Options

The CDC and Iowa Department of Public Health have provided additional options to shorten the length of quarantine in some situations. Under these options, you may decide quarantine can end:

1. After 10 days without a COVID-19 test, AND if the person has experienced NO symptoms during the 10-day period.

2. After 7 days with a negative test conducted no earlier than day 5 from the last exposure AND if the person has experienced NO symptoms during the 7-day period.

 After stopping quarantine, people should:

  • Continue to watch for symptoms until 14 days after exposure.
  • If they have symptoms, immediately self-isolate and contact their local public health authority or healthcare provider.
  • Wear a mask, stay at least 6 feet from others, wash their hands, avoid crowds, and take other steps to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The best way to protect yourself and others is to stay home for 14 days if you think you’ve been exposed to someone who has COVID-19. Quarantine helps prevent spread of disease that can occur before a person knows they have the virus.
