Swiss Valley Summer Camps

2017 Summer Camps Registration Packet

All camps are filled on a first come first serve basis. Registration forms can be mailed in, dropped off at our office, or you can register online at: https://secure.getmeregistered.com/get_information.php?event_id=126203. Payment and forms must be received in order for your child to be fully registered. Camps fill quickly and we will maintain a waiting list for each camp. Please call 563-556-6745 with any questions.

Woodcock Watch & Owl Prowl

Whitewater Canyon

Join Bob Walton, Jackson, Jones, and Dubuque County naturalists for a night at Whitewater Canyon. We will be on the hunt for some amazing nocturnal birds. We will call for owls and observe the mating dance of the American woodcock. It will be a wonderful night full of wildlife to be sure to join us dressed for the weather!

 

Lunch-n-Learn: Mushroom 101

Honeybee Basics and Beyond

The 2017 Iowa Honey Queen, Carly Raye Vannoy, will be presenting about honeybees, honey, beekeeping and beyond! Those who attend will learn how bees make mummies, the color of mystery honey, the strange use of beehives in medieval times, and much more! Come learn why we want to save the bees and how we can make that happen.

 

Keystone StarLab

The Keystone StarLab will be at Swiss Valley Nature Center. Climb inside and see the night sky in a whole new way!

 

Trout Stocking

April 22nd, 10:00am-12:00pm

Heritage Pond

Bring the whole family out to see the Iowa DNR stock trout into Heritage Pond. We will have extra poles and bait on hand if you need them but you must have a valid fishing license and trout stamp.

 

Heritage Trail Cleanup

Saturday, April 22nd, 2:00-3:30pm

Meet at Heritage Pond parking lot

Lend a hand and help us clean up the Heritage Trail. We will meet at the Heritage Pond parking lot and split into groups to cover different areas of the trails. Trash bags, grabbers, and gloves will be provided. Come on your own or get a group together and help us keep Heritage Trail clean and beautiful for both users and wildlife. Spring Wildflower Series

Sunday, April 30th, 1:00pm – Swiss Valley Nature Center (Hike)

Saturday, May 6th, 1:00pm – Heritage Trail (Bike)

Head out with a DCCB naturalist and check out the variety of beautiful spring wildflowers in bloom. Choose from two different dates and locations or join us for both! The program at Swiss Valley Nature Center will be a hike and we will be biking for the Heritage Trail program. Please bring your own bike and helmet.

 

OWLS (Older Wiser Livelier): Forage & Float

Meet at EB Lyons Center

Join us for a day of foraging and floating! Jen Meyer and Andy Benson will be discussing wild edibles and where to find them. We will gather some items to add to our lunch and you can either stay to help cook or take part in a float down Catfish Creek. We will all meet back at the center for a delicious lunch! Cost is $6. Bring your own canoe or kayak or borrow one of ours. Supply is limited so call to register today, 563-556-6745.

 

Bird Banding with Dave Shealer

Swiss Valley Nature Center

Local birding expert Dave Shealer from Loras College for a bird netting and banding program at Swiss Valley! You might get a chance to see chickadees, cardinals, and even migrating songbirds traveling to northern breeding grounds. You will want to be part of this unique, one of a kind experience.

 

Conservation Volunteer Picnic

Dubuque County Conservation could not fulfill its mission without a group of dedicated volunteers. We would like to invite those who have volunteered with us over the past year or who are interested in volunteering with us in the future to attend our first Conservation Volunteer Picnic. Free Fishing Weekend (June 2-4)

Take advantage of the Iowa DNR’s free fishing weekend with a day of fishing at Heritage Pond. We will have extra poles and bait on hand.

 

Becoming an Outdoor Woman Summer Workshop

Saturday, June 17th, 7:30am-2:30pm

This summer event is for any woman (18 and over) who has wanted to learn more about the great outdoors or is just getting started in the addictive hobby of outdoor recreation! Volunteers will provide hands on interaction for participants: rifle, shotgun, archery, fish cleaning and cooking, fly fishing and more!
