Swiss Valley Summer Camps

2017 Summer Camps Registration Packet

All camps are filled on a first come first serve basis. Registration forms can be mailed in, dropped off at our office, or you can register online at: https://secure.getmeregistered.com/get_information.php?event_id=126203. Payment and forms must be received in order for your child to be fully registered. Camps fill quickly and we will maintain a waiting list for each camp. Please call 563-556-6745 with any questions.

Lunch-n-Learn – Nature Photography with Andreas Exner

Wednesday, February 8th, 11:00am-12:30pm

Andreas Exner, native from Eastern Germany is a wildlife and landscape photographer that specializes in the wetlands and woodlands along the Mississippi River.  He will present on his amazing photographs and what he learned while taking the pictures along the way. Registration is needed prior to the event for the meal. $10/person. Meal is optional. If no meal is included the program is free!

 

No School Winter Day Camp – Swiss Valley Nature Center

Friday, February 10th, 9:00-11:00am (Ages 5-8), 1:00-3:00 PM (Ages 9-12) 

Looking for something for the kiddos to do on the teacher professional development day? Bring them out to Swiss Valley Nature Center for some winter wonderland fun! We will play winter games and try out snowshoeing!

 

Snowshoes & Yoga – Swiss Valley Nature Center

Saturday, February 18th, 10:00am

Strap on a pair of snowshoes and join a naturalist on a hike through the preserve. After your hike an instructor from Ignite Power Yoga Studio will lead us through a yoga session. Snowshoes supply is limited so call to reserve your pair, 556-6745. Bring yoga mat or towel.

 

Snowshoe Hike – Whitewater Canyon

Nature Trivia Bee – Swiss Valley Nature Center

Thursday, February 23rd, 7:00-9:00pm

Dubuque County Conservation invites you to create a team to participate in the Nature Trivia Bee Fundraiser! Teams are open to adults. Cost: $40 per trivia team (up to 4 people.) Pre-registration required by Thursday before the event. Spectators of all ages are welcome free of cost but donations are encouraged. This friendly group competition will pit you against other teams to test your knowledge of the natural world. Questions will cover a variety of topics including reptiles and amphibians, birds, mammals, weather, geology, and more! Participants work together with their team to answer questions and those with the most correct answers at the end of the night will be crowned the Nature Trivia champions! Register your team by stopping at the nature center or calling 556-6745. We encourage businesses, organizations, educators, community groups, and the public to form a team to showcase their pride!

 

Voyage to the Bottom of the World with Ty Smedes

Sunday, February 26th, 1:00pm

In December of 2014, Ty Smedes spent almost a month exploring the southern reaches of the globe on the Expedition ship Ortelius. Ty will take us ashore to visit the huge Fur Seal Colonies and to witness the titanic struggle between Bull Elephant Seals, each battling to become beach-master. King Penguin colonies numbering 335,000 pairs or more. We’ll see and hear their struggles to survive in a challenging climate. Along the Antarctic Peninsula, we will visit dazzling blue icebergs in shapes that defy the imagination. Join us for this educational and visually stunning presentation about this beautiful and wildlife-rich part of the world. Ty’s photos have been published by many major magazines and book publishers. Game Tasting – Swiss Valley Nature Center

Go wild! Come out to Swiss Valley Nature Center and taste wild game prepared by Dubuque County Conservation Park Rangers! Enjoy venison, turkey, pheasant, fish, rabbit, and more. Park rangers will share their tips and tricks for preparing their amazing dishes.

 

Becoming an Outdoor Woman Winter Workshop – Swiss Valley Nature Center

Join experts in the conservation/outdoor world for a day of excitement and education. We will present a variety of activities. Participants should be 18 and over and register by calling 563-556-6745.

 

“A Visit with Ding Darling” by Tom Milligan – Swiss Valley Nature Center

Sunday, March 5th, 1:00pm

Jay N. “Ding” Darling visits with audience as an old friends in his 11th office at the Des Moines Register. Beginning with his early years in Sioux City where he became aware of the natural world and developed his skills as an editorial cartoonist. He won 2 Pulitzer Prizes for his creations. From the introductionof the Duck Stamp to the creation of the National Wild Turkey Federation, Darling’s influence was felt not only though his cartoons but his actions as well. This program is sponsored by Humanities Iowa and the Friends of DCCB as part of their annual meeting.
